Does a Trump Account affect FAFSA or college financial aid?

Separate the account balance from money taken out. The 2026–27 Federal Student Aid Handbook excludes noneducation IRA balances from FAFSA assets but treats distributions separately as income. Applying that general rule to a Trump Account is our interpretation of its IRS classification; the handbook passage does not name Trump Accounts.

Money still in the account

The 2026–27 handbook excludes noneducation IRA balances from reportable assets. Our application to Trump Accounts is an interpretation, not a named FSA ruling.

Money distributed from it

Distributions can affect income used for aid. Tax-free for income-tax purposes does not by itself settle FAFSA treatment.

What the official sources establish

IRS rules classify a Trump Account as a type of traditional IRA. The FSA handbook’s excluded-assets passage lists noneducation IRAs. Read together, these support treating the account balance under that general retirement-asset exclusion, subject to the applicable award-year instructions. This is a reasoned application of two sources, not a Trump Account-specific statement from the Education Department.

Why a withdrawal needs its own check

The handbook distinguishes assets from income and handles IRA distributions and rollovers separately. Ask the school which income year and reporting fields apply to the actual transaction. Do not assume an education-related tax exception also removes an aid effect.

Does this answer every financial-aid question?

No. CSS Profile is used for nonfederal institutional aid. Ask each school about its own requirements. SSI and Medicaid are separate benefit systems with separate rules; a FAFSA interpretation does not answer those questions.

Practical suggestions

These are Kids Money Map’s suggestions, not additional program rules.

  • Ask the school’s financial-aid office: “For this award year, how should this Trump Account balance and any distribution or conversion be reported?” Keep the written answer with the relevant account and tax records.
  • Recheck the rules for the award year when the child actually applies. Do not send financial records or SSNs to Kids Money Map.
